Chain guides come in various forms and fit to bikes in different ways, but all are designed to keep the tension in the chain whilst the bicycle is being buffeted around. As a result they can be particularly useful on downhill mountain bikes, jump bikes and single speed bikes. However, they are not suitable for fixed gear cycles as any backward pressure applied to the chain might be shipped, jamming the rear wheel.
