Cycle Computers
Cycling computers all work with a sensor either on the forks, chainstay or in the case of devices made by Mavic, the sensor is attached to the wheels skewer. These sensors pick up the revolution from the wheel when a magnet attached to one of the spokes passes over it. A signal is then sent to the computer on the handle bars. This is either done through wires or via radio signals.
Wireless Devices
Although very reliable if they are not installed correctly on the bike wires can look messy whereas a cordless computer is hassle-free and easy to set up. The only down side is that the signal can be interfered with, although in modern computers this is very infrequent.
Computer Functions
The standard functions that you should expect from even the most basic computers are current speed, average speed, trip distance and trip time. Most devices use two main buttons to scroll through the functions and are easily reset by pressing the two together. As you move up through the range you should look for cadence, heart rate monitors and the ability for your data to be downloaded.
