BMX Bikes
There are a number of cycles considered suitable for the disciplines in freestyle BMX riding. Ramp or park riding mostly takes place on purpose built half pipes or bowls, pulling off spectacular aerial tricks. This sport requires a strong bicycle to withstand the impact of frequent crashes.
Flatland Riding Style
Flatland BMX is a discipline which can take place almost anywhere and requires complicated tricks to be performed on the BMX whist the bike remains on the ground. The bicycle is often stationary as the rider manoeuvres around it which is why lightweight materials are important. Freestyle is a rather general term for now distinct disciplines of the sport. We make every effort to show in the individual bike pages the suitability of all the cycles we sell.
The technology behind most BMX riding has remained fairly simple due to the nature of the tricks performed. The primary need is for simple well made robust bicycles. However, the one area of the sport that has seen technological advances is that of BMX racing. Quite simply, riders race each other around purpose built tracks with technical corners and jumps and the first to cross the line wins.
Lightweight Speed Bicycles
Speed is paramount and so new materials are being used to stiffen and lighten up the frames. Different geometries such as shorter wheel bases are being used to help the transfer of power. Similar to road race cycles, aluminium is very popular for its responsive ride and more recently carbon and titanium have been experimented with. Due to its recent Olympic status, this area of the sport is sure to see huge growth. At AW Cycles we stock a range of race ready machines to suit all levels of competition.
