BMX and down hill helmets greatly differ in design from normal road or MTB helmets. They generally come in two types; freestyle lids or full face helmets. With style playing a large part in both sports, the ’skid lids’ or ’piss pot’ are an essential item on the BMX park or street.
Crash Helmet Style & Shape
Shaped more like a military helmet it is true to say that BMX riders have set the trend for helmet use, with it becoming part and parcel to the scene, as opposed to a normal helmet used on the road that some still ridicule others for wearing. The second type of helmet used in both types of riding are full face helmets similar to those used in motocross, normally worn with goggles. These provide full head and face protection which is essential for BMX racing and down hill where crashes, when they happen, are generally on the harder and more dramatic side.
