Comfort on a bike has a direct effect on cycling performance, and of course on your enjoyment of any ride.

The key to keeping a consistant body temperature is layering, so in the winter a gilet can provide extra insulation, but it becomes especially useful in warmer weather when a long sleeved jacket or jersey is too hot but you still need some protection from windchill.
There are various options with different levels of breathability and wind-proofing, some with rear pockets or light loops and in a variety of colours and styles.
