Time Trial Helmets
In order to maximise airflow over the body, aero head fairings have been developed that manage to improve aerodynamics and save vital seconds when racing against the clock. Until recently these head fairings were simply moulded plastic, which if the rider was to fall would provide no more protection than if riding without it.
Rigorously Safety Tested
Although still legal in the UK TT scene, the International Cycling Union (UCI) has passed legislation that requires all helmets, including those for a time trial, to pass safety tests and so provide protection to the head. Companies such as Rudy project, Limar, Bell, Met and Giro have responded to this and due to pressure from the professional teams that they sponsor. For aerodynamic advantages over the opposition, these manufacturers have developed several helmets that in wind tunnel tests are said to be just as aerodynamic, if not more efficient than the old head fairings.
